The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, also referred to as the PSAT, is a standardized test that measures critical-thinking skills that are important for success in college, including critical reading, math problem-solving and writing skills. Juniors may qualify for National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) competitions for college scholarships. There are three types of National Merit Scholarships: 1) National Merit Scholarships 2) Corporate-sponsored scholarships 3) College-sponsored scholarships. Sophomores and Freshmen may take the PSAT for practice. Parents should check with their employers to see if the company sponsors scholarships that are based upon PSAT/NMSQT test scores. If so, students must take the test to qualify for these scholarships. The test will be administered on Saturday, October 19h beginning at 8:00 a.m. There is a $20 registration fee. Interested students may sign up with Mrs. Fontenot or Ms. Boutte in the guidance department. The deadline to register is Tuesday, September 10th.
